Plasco project shelved

The plan to turn solid waste into energy in Central Alberta was shelved late last week as the Central Waste Management Commission announced it would no longer be pursuing the Plasco gasification plant.

“We think the Plasco technology is a great solution, but their minimum sized plant is too big for our needs,” Dave Hoar, chairman of the CWMC, said in a press release.

“CMWC will start to investigate alternatives suitable for the Commission’s requirements and will continue to work with neighbouring communities to find ‘green’ options available to divert our waste from landfill facilities,” Hoar said.

Alistar McLean, senior vice-president of business development for Plasco, said if the CWMC could find more municipalities to partner with, it would be happy to revisit the project.

“If not, we wish the commission luck in finding an alternate solution. The important thing is to stop sending waste to landfills,” he said.
