Grizzly bears captured northwest of Sundre

Fish and Wildlife officers have captured and relocated two grizzly bears that had been causing problems northwest of Sundre recently.

A 320-kilogram (700-pound) male was captured in a culvert trap on agricultural land north of Burnstick Lake on Wednesday, and a 181-kilogram (400-pound) male was captured in a snare the following day.

Both animals were then tranquilized and examined by Fish and Wildlife officers before being transported to a release area about 800 kilometres north of Sundre.

The exact release area is not being made public, said Sundre-Olds Fish and Wildlife officer Adam Mirus.

The bears are believed to be responsible for the killing of a calf and for breaking into grain bins in the area over the past several weeks, he said.

Fish and Wildlife officers set up three culvert traps in an effort to capture a Grizzly bear believed to have been causing trouble northwest of Sundre.

Anyone spotting a bear in the area is being asked to call the Sundre Fish and Wildlife office at 403-638-3805 or 911 if the bear is posing an immediate public safety hazard.

Mountain View BearSmart Society (MVBS) reported on its website last week that a grizzly bear was sighted in the Elkton area on the morning of April 11.
